2021 Jean-Marie Fourrier - Chambertin Vieille Vigne (750ml)
Domaine Fourrier is a family estate in Gevrey-Chambertin, taken over by Jean-Marie Fourrier in 1994 at the age of twenty-three. He trained at Domaine Drouhin and alongside the legendary Henri Jayer before returning home, and now farms roughly ten hectares of old vines across some of the village's most storied sites. His approach favors minimal intervention, which he describes as close to doing nothing at all.
This Vieille Vigne Chambertin is assembled from sixteen separate plots spread across the grand cru, with an average vine age of sixty to seventy years. The grapes are hand-harvested and sorted in the vineyard, fermented with a portion of whole clusters, and raised in barrel with new oak kept to a modest share, a regime built to protect the transparency of the site rather than add overt oak character.
The 2021 shows a deep purple color with dark fruit and a touch of reduction that gives way to perfume with air, revealing concentrated dark raspberry and a hint of salinity. The palate is full-bodied and richly concentrated, with refined tannins and enough acidity to keep everything in balance. It is built for the cellar, only beginning to show its full character several years from now.
