The Lafarge family's winemaking roots in Volnay date to the nineteenth century, and the estate remains one of the most respected traditional names in the village. Under Frédéric and Chantal Lafarge, the domaine farms biodynamically and vinifies with native yeasts and minimal intervention, an approach carried through every level of the range, from village bottlings up to its most prized premier cru holdings.

Clos des Chênes sits high on Volnay's slope, where thin, stony limestone soils give the wine unusual intensity and structure compared to the domaine's other sites. Lafarge holds a sizeable parcel here, farmed with the same biodynamic principles as the rest of the estate, and the wine is aged in older French oak barrels to preserve purity and let the terroir lead.

The wine shows red cherry, raspberry, and violet, with a distinct note of crushed stone running throughout. Concentrated yet elegant, it carries fine tannins and vibrant acidity through a long, mineral-driven finish built for the cellar. It pairs well with duck, lamb, or truffle-scented dishes.

92-94 Points
"The 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes is lovely, delivering aromas of cherries, red berries and plums mingled with rose petals, spices and vine smoke. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, with excellent depth at the core, powdery tannins and lively acids, it concludes with a broad, persistent finish. This parcel has more in common with Taillepieds than with the rest of Clos des Chênes, which explains why it's such a singular expression of this climat."
