Michel Lafarge, the patriarch behind the family's eponymous Volnay estate, passed away in 2020, and today his son Frédéric and granddaughter Clothilde carry the tradition forward. The domaine continues to farm organically and biodynamically with minimal new oak, tending an extensive collection of village and premier cru parcels scattered across Volnay and its neighboring villages, including Beaune and Meursault.

Les Mitans sits mid-slope on a gentle, southeast-facing incline at around two hundred fifty meters, with vines planted in 1952 and 1976 on brown clay over limestone. The small parcel is farmed organically and biodynamically, fully destemmed, and fermented two to three weeks with ambient yeasts, then aged around eighteen months in barrels with a modest share of new oak.

The wine shows Morello cherry and wild strawberry, with wilted rose petal, sweet spice, and orange zest. Medium-bodied and harmonious, it has fine-grained tannins and a silky, lacy structure that makes it one of the more immediately charming wines in the range. It pairs nicely with roast quail, glazed ham, or a fresh goat cheese.

92-94 Points
"A more elegant and airier nose is comprised by very fresh aromas of mostly red berry, floral and spice wisps. The caressing and lacy yet nicely punchy and rich middleweight flavors possess a lovely sense of harmony on the moderately firm and beautifully balanced finale that stays on the palate an impressively long time. This is lovely and understated, in fact, it's very Mitans."
