2023 Denis Bachelet - Bourgogne Rouge (750ml)
Domaine Denis Bachelet is a tiny, cult family estate in Gevrey-Chambertin, founded generations ago by Denis's great-grandfather, a cooper by trade who began acquiring vineyards on the side. Denis has run the domaine himself since 1982, growing it slowly from under two hectares to just four and a half today, and the wines remain available largely by allocation. Known for scrupulous vineyard work and a hands-off cellar, Bachelet has built a reputation for coaxing unusual depth and finesse out of even his most modest appellation.
This Bourgogne Rouge comes from two old-vine parcels, Pressonier and Grand Champs, sitting right at the edge of Gevrey-Chambertin itself. The grapes are hand-harvested, sorted carefully, and fermented with native yeasts, with gentle extraction and low yields carrying through the entire process. The result punches well above its regional classification.
Aromas of cherry, wild berry, and a touch of licorice lead into a medium-bodied palate that is fleshy and juicy, with fine-grained tannins and a clean, faintly mineral finish. Floral notes of violet and rose petal add lift throughout. Serve it with roast pheasant, pork tenderloin, or a simple plate of charcuterie.
