Domaine de Montille remains synonymous with Volnay, where the family estate has stood for generations under the guiding hand of the late Hubert de Montille, whose humility and belief in letting terroir speak for itself shaped the domaine's reputation. His children Étienne and Alix now run the property together, farming biodynamically and continuing that same philosophy of restraint across their Côte de Beaune holdings.

Most of this Puligny-Montrachet comes from an unusual 1.1-hectare plot within the premier cru Les Chalumeaux, downgraded to village status in 1975 after the previous owner brought in outside topsoil that violated appellation rules. It remains the only village-level vineyard sitting mid-slope among the premier crus, and decades of erosion combined with organic farming have pushed the vines' roots back down into the original clay-limestone terroir, giving the wine unusual density for its classification. Two smaller parcels, Levron and Baudrières-Nosroy, round out the blend. Fermentation happens in demi-muids with native yeasts, followed by a year in wood and a further rest in stainless steel.

The bouquet is clean and precise, with a medium-bodied palate, a fine thread of acidity, and a touch of spice on the finish. It suits white asparagus, steamed clams, or a young Comté.

89-91 Points
"An exuberantly floral-suffused nose displays additional breadth in the form of pear, apple and lemon rind scents. The round, caressing and delicious yet punchy medium weight flavors also conclude in a clean, dry and solidly complex and persistent finale. While this should easily reward 5 to 8 years of keeping, it could also be approached young.
