Rugiens-Bas is often called Pommard's Grand Cru in waiting, and Domaine de Montille — one of Burgundy's most storied estates, rooted in Volnay since the 1730s — is the largest single holder of the vineyard, with 1.02 hectares built on the red, iron-laden clay that gives the site its trademark power. The 2018, vinified with two-thirds whole clusters, shows a well-defined, complex bouquet with echoes of the domaine's Pézerolles. Medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, it carries more matière and a creamier texture than its sibling cru, closing on a precise, persistent, slightly opulent finish. Structured, savory, and unmistakably ferrous — very fine Pommard built to age.

Country France
Region Burgundy, Côte de Beaune
Appellation Pommard 1er Cru "Rugiens-Bas"
Producer Domaine de Montille
Varietal 100% Pinot Noir
92-94 Points
"Once again, the wood influence is subtle though not imperceptible on the slightly cooler aromas of lavender, violet, rose petal, red and dark cherry and a whiff of plum liqueur. There is excellent volume to the solidly concentrated and intensely mineral-driven flavors that possess evident muscle and power on the firm, serious and complex finale that is also clearly built-to-age. In a word, impressive."
