Rugiens is widely considered Pommard's finest vineyard, and it's the one site Benjamin Leroux says could have lured him back to the appellation. His parcels sit at the foot of Les Rugiens-Hauts on the iron-rich red clay that gives the wine its signature depth, farmed under a long-term contract with the same owner as his Volnay Caillerets. Only four barrels were made in 2022, half whole-bunch, aged partly in a 450-liter barrel previously used for white fermentation. The result is dark and layered, with blackberry, dark cherry and blackcurrant fruit framed by truffle, crushed herb and smoky mineral notes, firm polished tannins, and real length — serious, age-worthy Pommard with the Leroux finesse.

Country France
Region Burgundy, Côte de Beaune
Appellation Pommard 1er Cru "Rugiens-Hauts"
Producer Benjamin Leroux
Varietal 100% Pinot Noir
92-94 Points
"A slightly cooler nose of plum, floral and cherry isn't quite as spice and is more reticent as well. There is more volume and markedly more power to the super-sleek flavors that flash an abundance of minerality on the youthfully austere, balanced, moderately austere and built-to-age finale. This is excellent with outstanding development potential to match."
