Cambria Estate Winery sits in the Santa Maria Valley, part of the Jackson Family Wines portfolio since Jess Jackson and Barbara Banke acquired it in 1986. Julia's Vineyard, planted in the 1970s and named for Jackson's daughter Julia in 1988, anchors the estate's Pinot Noir program and is approaching its fiftieth year in the ground. The winery has built its reputation on translating this single site's distinct character into a wine that captures the valley's cool, coastal personality.

Santa Maria Valley runs east to west, an unusual orientation that pulls cool Pacific air deep into the region even as the eastern end warms in the sun. That combination stretches out the growing season, giving grapes extended hang time to develop ripeness alongside bright acidity. The 2023 Pinot Noir was destemmed and aged seven months in French oak, with only 18 percent new wood, a restrained approach meant to let the vineyard's own character take the lead rather than the oak.

This vintage opens with pomegranate, dried cranberry, and black cherry on the nose, joined by cinnamon, sage, and clove. The palate carries red fruit alongside earthy, savory spice notes and balanced tannins through a long finish. Try it with roast chicken, grilled salmon, or a mild cheese platter.

90 Points
" The 2023 Pinot Noir Julia's Vineyard is another fabulous entry-level wine, if

you can even call it that. Bright, rich and forward, the oak is front and

center, but it frames and braces the wine nicely. Spice tones and dark red

cherry fruit form the core. There's real character and Santa Maria Valley

identity here. This is particularly impressive at $25.
