Sophie Schaal makes wine in Hunawihr, Alsace, alongside her husband Julien, whose own négociant label focuses on Grand Cru Riesling sourced from across the region. Under her own name Sophie takes a different path, working with organic, low-intervention methods to produce small quantities of Riesling, Pinot Gris, and this Pinot Noir, letting the fruit itself carry the wine rather than heavy cellar technique.

The 2023 Pinot Noir comes from a blend of two old-vine, organically farmed parcels whose varied soils include pink sandstone, blue schist, limestone, granite, and volcanic rock, a mix that reflects the geological diversity Alsace is known for. The grapes are handpicked, carefully sorted, and left to ferment naturally, with no added yeast. The wine then ages for about ten months in French oak before being bottled without fining, preserving its natural texture and clarity.

The color is a pale, translucent ruby, and the nose leans toward fresh red fruit with floral, slightly wild undertones. On the palate the wine is silky and light on its feet, with juicy cherry and raspberry flavors and soft, fine-grained tannins. Its bright acidity makes it a natural partner for roast poultry, grilled salmon, or lamb tagine.

89-91 Points
"The 2023 Pinot Noir is also picked on Grand Cru Osterberg. The ferment contained 15% whole bunches “to pronounce the delicate nature of Pinot Noir,” as Sophie Schaal says. Extraction was just via wetting the cap until fermentation started, followed by a few remontages until the peak of fermentation, with less later. It was aged in pièces, of which a fifth were new, and bottled in June 2023. The nose is smoky with oak but countered with vivid notions of ripe, red cherry and juicy pomegranate. The tannins are really fine, with a chiffon crunch, and a whole lot of tension. This is beautifully translucent and light-bodied, but with immense purity and a lovely smoky echo. (Bone-dry)"
