2013 Kopke - Colheita Tawny
Kopke is the oldest Port house still in operation, founded in 1638 by German merchants who settled in Porto and began trading wine along the Douro. Now owned by Sogevinus, the house has built its modern reputation on Colheita Port, a specialty it has pursued with particular dedication, earning acclaim worldwide for the category. Unlike blended tawnies, Kopke's Colheitas come from a single harvest year and are aged in wood for as long as the house sees fit, only bottled once a specific release is commissioned.
The 2013 Colheita was made from hand-picked grapes gathered at optimal ripeness during that year's harvest, then fortified and set aside to age slowly in seasoned oak casks at the Kopke cellars. Because Colheita Ports carry a single vintage rather than a blend of years, the wine develops its character gradually over time in wood, gaining complexity and softening in color before eventual bottling, with the vintage date clearly marked as a mark of authenticity and traceability.
The wine shows a brick hue with reddish nuances, opening with aromas of black plum, cinnamon, and a touch of aniseed. On the palate, bright cherry and plum notes meet a distinct chocolate character with hints of chicory, backed by dried fig and hazelnut. The texture is chewy and layered, with a light raisin quality and a long finish touched by spice and gentle licorice. It pairs nicely with crème brûlée, roasted pecans, or a slice of pumpkin pie.
