Kopke holds the distinction of being the oldest Port house still in operation, founded in 1638 by Nicolau Kopke and his son Cristiano, who arrived in Portugal as representatives of the Hanseatic League. Nearly four centuries later, the company remains guided by members of the Kopke family, who have built a reputation especially strong in Colheita, the single harvest tawny style the house is most known for.

This 1998 Colheita comes from one harvest year rather than a blend of vintages, fermented in temperature controlled lagares until the desired sweetness is reached, at which point grape brandy is added to fortify the wine. It was then aged in oak barrels for at least seven years, and considerably longer in this case, developing the deep color and layered complexity that separates true Colheita from a standard aged tawny blend.

The wine shows a bright brown color with red hues, its nose dominated by dried fruit with delicate notes of fresh cherry underneath. On the palate it turns elegant and complex, rich flavors woven together with warm spice through an unctuous, persistent finish. Serve lightly chilled alongside tarte tatin, crème brûlée, or a medium strength cheese.
