NV H.M. Borges - Madeira Verdelho 10 Year Old
H.M. Borges is a family-run Madeira house based in Funchal, with roots stretching back to 1877. Long regarded as one of the island's most traditional producers, the company built its reputation on wines that remain popular fixtures in Funchal's own bars and cafés, alongside a range that stretches from youthful three-year bottlings up through rare aged reserves. The house has stayed true to old-world methods even as many larger shippers have modernized their production.
This wine is made entirely from Verdelho grown in Ribeira da Janela, blended from multiple harvest years to reach an average age of ten years. Fermentation takes place with skin contact under careful temperature control, and the wine matures afterward in oak barrels using the traditional canteiro method, in which Madeira wines age slowly under the island's natural warmth to develop their distinctive character before bottling.
The wine shows a light amber color with golden and orange reflections. Its aroma is complex, marked by citrus, iodine, dried fruit, toasted nuts, and spice, with the wood influence coming through as an ethereal, well-integrated presence. The palate is medium-dry, with structured acidity, notes of honey and toast, and a long, refined finish. It shines as an aperitif with toasted almonds or alongside fresh tropical fruit.
