NV H.M. Borges - Madeira Verdelho 15 Year Old
Now guided by the fourth generation of the Borges family, H.M. Borges has kept its winemaking rooted in Funchal since Henrique Menezes Borges founded the house in 1877. The company remains one of the smallest producers on the island, sourcing Verdelho, Sercial, Boal, and Tinta Negra from growers across Madeira and aging its wines through the traditional canteiro method, in which casks mature slowly under the island's natural warmth rather than through artificial heating.
This Extra Reserva bottling is made entirely from Verdelho, drawn from multiple harvest years and blended to an average age of fifteen. The additional years in wood, compared to the house's younger Verdelho bottlings, give the wine noticeably more depth, body, and structure, along with a pronounced woody character that develops gradually through extended cask aging.
In the glass, the wine shows a brilliant old gold color with hints of green at the rim. The nose is complex, offering dried fruit, raisins, hazelnuts, and walnuts alongside a distinct woody note. On the palate it is medium-dry, well-structured, with firm tannins and flavors of honey, toast, and warm spice trailing into a long, dry finish. It suits a light soup, fresh tropical fruit, or a simple aperitif on its own.
