Kopke holds the distinction of being the oldest Port house still in operation, founded in 1638 by the German merchant Nicolau Kopke and his son Cristiano. Over the centuries the house built a reputation for patient, oxidative aging styles, and it remains particularly known for exploring white Port beyond the youthful, unaged bottlings most commonly seen on the market. This 30 Year Old bottling represents a blend of much older reserves, with the age statement on the label reflecting the average age of the wines that make up the final cuvée.

The wine is produced from traditional white Douro varieties, including Arinto, Viosinho, Gouveio, and Malvasia Fina, grown on the schist soils of the region. As with Kopke's other white styles, fermentation begins in stainless steel with the skins left in contact with the juice to build color and body, before the wine moves into oak casks for an extended, decades-long maturation that shapes its final character.

The color has deepened to a vibrant yellow-straw, with a nose of walnut and dried fig sharpening into cinnamon, ginger, and toasted hazelnut on the palate. Polished, round tannins balance a lively acidity, giving the wine a delicate, velvety texture despite its age. Serve well chilled with a scallop gratin, or afterward alongside a wedge of Stilton.

94 Points
