NV Rare Wine Co. (Vinhos Barbeito) - Madeira Boston Bual
The Rare Wine Co.'s Historic Series began in 1998, when the company partnered with Ricardo Freitas, owner of Vinhos Barbeito, to recreate the Madeira styles that once captivated America's founding generation. Freitas brought an extraordinary library of old Madeira to the project, with component wines ranging from ten to sixty years old, allowing the two to build complex, aged-tasting blends at approachable prices. Each wine in the core lineup takes its name from a U.S. city where Madeira was especially prized in the 18th and 19th centuries, with Boston Bual honoring the North's particular fondness for richer, sweeter styles.
Made in the Bual style, this wine draws on Barbeito's deep reserves of older Madeira, blended and fortified through the traditional mutage process to lock in natural sweetness. The resulting cuvée is sweeter than the series' drier bottlings, yet its structure leans on bright acidity rather than sheer richness, giving it real lift and definition.
The wine shows a light amber-tawny color and a complex nose of dried figs, walnuts, maple syrup, and warm cinnamon-clove spice, with hints of citrus peel and woodsmoke. On the palate it is medium to full-bodied, generously sweet but never cloying, finishing long and faintly saline. It pairs well with gingerbread, roasted chestnuts, or a spiced cake.
