2008 Kopke - Colheita Tawny
Kopke is the oldest Port house in the world, founded in 1638 when the German merchant Nicolau Kopke settled in Portugal as a representative of the Hanseatic League and began shipping wine from the Douro not long after. The company evolved from trading into vineyard ownership by the late eighteenth century, and its purchase of Quinta de São Luiz in 1922 remains a cornerstone of production today. Now part of Kopke Group under the Escotet family, the house has built nearly four centuries of reputation around its Colheitas, single harvest tawnies prized for their individual character from one year to the next.
By law, a Colheita must age in cask for a minimum of seven years before release, though the exact timing is left to the producer rather than fixed to a schedule. This 2008 was made from grapes grown on the Douro's schist terraces, fortified partway through fermentation with grape spirit, then left in small oak casks to develop slowly over more than a decade before bottling. Because each release is timed independently, a Colheita from this vintage can show noticeably different character depending on when it left the cask.
The color is a light brown with an orange glow, and the nose is rich with syrup fruit, spice, and dried fruit. On the palate the wine is delicate and well balanced, with fig, apricot, and hazelnut carrying through a long, appealing finish. Pair it with a caramel dessert or a refreshing citrus parfait.
