2013 Kopke - Colheita Tawny
Kopke is the oldest port house still in continuous operation, founded in 1638 by German merchants who settled in the Douro to trade wine. Now based in the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia and owned by the Sogevinus group since 2006, the house has built its reputation largely on Colheita tawnies, a category in which its library of vintages remains unmatched among Port producers. The 2013 release continues that long specialization in single-harvest aged tawnies.
Colheita Port differs from standard tawny in that it comes from a single year's harvest rather than a blend of vintages. The grapes, drawn from traditional Douro red varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz, are grown on the region's schist soils before fermentation and fortification. The wine then ages oxidatively for years in small oak casks, gradually taking on color and character from prolonged contact with air and wood, and is only bottled once the house judges it ready for release.
This tawny shows a gold-rimmed amber-red hue in the glass, with aromas of caramel, dried fig, and toasted walnut layered over brighter notes of sour cherry. The palate carries real sweetness but is lifted by lively acidity, giving a finish that turns nutty and slightly spiced. It pairs well with aged hard cheeses, roasted nuts, or a simple dark chocolate dessert.
