Kilbeggan Traditional Irish Whiskey 750ml

Kilbeggan takes its name from the County Westmeath distillery founded in 1757 by Matthias McManus, making it one of the oldest licensed whiskey sites in the world. The distillery survived a turbulent history, including the execution of an early owner for his role in an uprising against English rule, before finally closing in 1957. Local historians kept the buildings intact during the decades that followed, and John Teeling's Cooley Distillery took over the site in 1988, eventually resuming distillation there in 2007, in time for the 250th anniversary of its founding.

Kilbeggan Traditional is a blended Irish whiskey, with most production still centered at Cooley's distillery in County Louth, though the whiskey carries the name and legacy of the original Westmeath site. Unlike most Irish whiskeys, it is double distilled rather than triple distilled, a choice that preserves more of the raw grain character in the finished spirit. The whiskey rests in ex-bourbon casks, with some maturation taking place in Kilbeggan's own 200-year-old granite warehouses, and one of the world's oldest working copper pot stills, built in the 1800s, remains part of the distillery's production history.

The nose is clean and fresh, with citrus, honey, and barley leading into toasted malt and orchard fruit. On the palate, smooth honey sweetness meets a spicy malt undertone, rounded out by vanilla and a touch of caramel. The finish is malty and satisfying, closing with a gentle warmth of oak. Its light, approachable character makes it a natural fit for a whiskey ginger, and it also holds up well in a classic Irish coffee.
