NV Maynard's Porto 40-Year Old
Maynard's takes its name from Walter Maynard, one of the earliest English wine merchants trading in Port, whose shipments date back to 1652, and who was later appointed consul in Oporto by King Charles II. The brand's lineage connects through generations of marriages into the van Zeller family, historic Douro producers who once owned Quinta do Noval, and today Maynard's is produced by Barão de Vilar, a company founded in 1996 by Fernando and Álvaro van Zeller.
This 40 Year Old Tawny is a blend crafted from Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, and Tinta Roriz grapes, hand harvested and traditionally foot trodden in granite lagares before fermentation. The finished wine represents a careful selection of exceptionally aged stocks, blended to achieve a consistent house style, having spent decades slowly evolving in oak casks that concentrate flavor as the wine gradually evaporates and softens with time.
The tawny shows a deep amber hue in the glass, with a powerful, complex nose of roasted coffee, toasted nuts, cinnamon, and caramel built up through its long contact with wood. On the palate it turns rich with toasted walnut and chocolate, its concentrated sweetness cut by lively acidity through a long, spiced finish. Serve slightly chilled alongside aged cheeses or a not overly sweet dessert.
