Niepoort has been making Port since 1842, when the house was founded by a Dutch merchant family in Vila Nova de Gaia, and it remains one of the last major Port producers still fully family-owned. Alongside its acclaimed aged tawnies and increasingly well-regarded unfortified Douro wines, Niepoort has long treated its entry-level Ruby as a serious expression in its own right, built around the idea that the wine's color should recall the deep red of the ruby stone itself rather than a darker, more inky shade.

The fruit comes from low-yielding old vineyards in the Cima Corgo, the traditional heart of the Douro's Port country. Grapes are foot-trodden in open granite lagares, and fermentation is kept short to preserve natural grape sweetness before the must is fortified with grape spirit. The wine then rests for about three years in large old wooden vats, a choice that limits oxygen contact and keeps both color and fruit character vivid rather than pushing the wine toward an oxidative, tawny style.

The result is dark red in the glass, with a lively aroma of blackberry, plum, and cherry underscored by a mineral edge and a whisper of spice. The palate is youthful and well extracted, balanced enough to drink easily on its own or alongside food. It pairs nicely with spiced sausage, dark chocolate cake, or a simple charcuterie board.
