The 2017 Croft Sérikos Port highlights concentrated grape must from historic old-vine blocks at Quinta da Roêda, a north-Douro estate whose vines survived phylloxera and were replanted in the late nineteenth century. Harvest began on August 30, marking the earliest picking date in over seventy years due to an exceptionally dry maturation window that naturally intensified the fruit. Following traditional foot-treading in granite lagares, the wine rested for approximately two years in used French oak barrels, preserving structural balance while allowing primary aromatics to remain bright.

In the glass, the port reveals an inky black center ringed by deep purple, releasing an expansive nose of crisp red berry, ripe black fruit, eucalyptus, rock rose, mint, citrus peel, and pressed rose petals. The palate mirrors these layers with a thick, dense profile where opulent fruit moves through a fine mesh of ripe, approachable tannins, finishing with the silky texture that shares its name with the estate’s original silk-crop heritage.

Pair this Port with seared duck breast, crumbled aged Stilton, or a dark chocolate torte. The wine’s concentrated fruit and structured tannin matrix complement rich fats and bitter cacao, creating a balanced tasting progression that highlights the estate’s traditional production methods. Each bottle functions as a documented record of the Douro’s oldest surviving vine parcels and their extended maturation cycle.

98 Points
"Intense, featuring a rather dark persona, with baker's chocolate, Turkish coffee and steeped black currant notes taking the lead, backed by bitter plum and fig reduction flavors. A long tarry streak and a singed juniper accent show on the finish, ending with a pleasantly woodsy tug. A backward, grippy Port. Best from 2035 through 2060. 25 cases imported."
