The 2020 Le Macchiole Bolgheri Rosso delivers structured Tuscan balance through a carefully calibrated blend of Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Sourced from four estate vineyards under Cinzia Campolmi’s leadership, this red features fifty percent Merlot paired with roughly equal shares of the remaining varieties to create a profile that emphasizes precision and fruit purity.

Fermentation spans approximately fifteen days in stainless steel before the wine enters its aging phase. Ten months of maturation in second through fourth passage barriques, complemented by a portion rested in cement vats, softens the texture while preserving the vintage’s natural acidity. This mixed vessel approach yields a bottle with immediate depth and underlying structural resilience.

Aroma notes open with ripe plum and black cherry, followed closely by damp earth, dry cedar, and cracked black pepper. A faint layer of crushed rose petals provides background brightness without overwhelming the core fruit. The medium-to-full body presents silk-like, integrated tannins supported by lively acidity that drives a long, clean finish.

This wine pairs best with robust, savory preparations. Serve alongside grilled beef cuts, herb-crusted roasted duck, or braised lamb over rich tomato-based pasta. The balanced tannin structure and fresh acidity also make it suitable for cellar storage through the late 2020s, offering drinkability now alongside steady evolution.

93 Points
"The Le Macchiole 2020 Bolgheri Rosso is 50% Merlot, 20% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Franc, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a powerhouse wine that has become a steady little engine for the estate economy, growing from a production of 36,000 bottles to 140,000 bottles made annually today. This vintage does a terrific balancing act with dark fruit and concentration on the one hand and an accessible easy-drinking personality on the other. Black fruit cedes to baked brioche, spice and toasted aniseed. The wine finishes for 10 months in a combination of second, third and fourth-year barrique, and about 30% of the total goes into cement. The finish is polished and fresh, and you get good value."
