Crafted across two sun-facing estates in Castellina and Radda in Chianti, the 2021 Brancaia Il Blu Toscana Rosso IGT delivers a Merlot-driven structure rooted in specific altitude and soil variables. Vines occupy 230 to 400 meters of elevation across contrasting loam and rocky substrates, producing a post-fermentation composition of 80 percent Merlot supplemented by Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. The must ferments at controlled temperatures with eighteen days of skin contact, then matures for eighteen months in predominantly new barriques and selected used casks. Following a brief hold in concrete tanks, the wine spends a full calendar year aging in bottle before release, ensuring early accessibility and integrated oak.

Aromatic layers of dark currant, violet, and cocoa open onto a firm, creamy-tannin palate that sustains an intense sweet-berry finish. The polished texture and measurable alcohol balance allow it to anchor richly flavored meals effectively. Serve braised short ribs, roasted game cuts, or wedges of aged Gouda to complement the wine’s savory mid-palate and prolonged finish. Marked by its cobalt label and consistent vintage development, this Widmer family offering functions as a reliable centerpiece for formal dinner service or extended cellar storage.

95 Points
"Blackberry and black currant fruit reign in this slim, juicy red, which is defined by vibrant acidity and a line of dense, well-mannered tannins as it plays out on the finish. Accents of vanilla, graphite and black pepper add detail. Shows fine potential. Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2027 through 2038. 3,000 cases made, 288 cases imported."
