NV H.M. Borges - Madeira Verdelho 20 Year Old
H.M. Borges is one of only eight remaining bottlers on the island of Madeira, a fourth-generation family company founded in 1877 by Henrique Menezes Borges. The operation remains centered in a historic Funchal building dating to 1924, where the natural warmth of the upper floors still drives the traditional canteiro aging process used across the house's range.
This wine is crafted entirely from Verdelho grown in Ribeira da Janela, on the island's cooler north coast, a region well suited to the variety's naturally high acidity. The wine is a blend drawn from multiple harvest years, aged in oak casks to an average of 20 years, allowing the fruit to develop far greater concentration and complexity than younger expressions of the grape typically show.
The finished Madeira pours a deep golden amber with orange highlights, its nose layered with iodine, dried fruit, citrus peel, and baking spice built up over decades in wood. On the palate it turns medium dry, structured by firm tannins and lively acidity, with flavors of honey, toasted nuts, and tropical fruit lingering into a long finish. Serve slightly chilled as an aperitif, or pour it alongside sushi or a bittersweet fruit tart.
