2020 Bertani - Valpolicella Ripasso DOC Superiore Catullo (750ml)
Bertani has been at the center of Veneto winemaking for more than 150 years, an estate whose name is nearly synonymous with Amarone itself. Founded in 1857 by brothers Giovan Battista and Gaetano Bertani in the years surrounding Italian unification, the winery built its reputation on the historic Tenuta Novare estate in Arbizzano di Negrar. Bertani has continued to pair that long heritage with careful modern refinement, applying the same rigor across its full lineup, from the flagship Amarone down through wines like Catullo.
Catullo comes from Valpolicella Classica fruit grown on double Guyot-trained vines averaging twenty years old, planted in marl-limestone soil with clay deposits. Named for the classical Latin poet, it follows the traditional ripasso method: the young Valpolicella wine is refermented in March on the still slightly sweet skins left over from Amarone production, a second pass that deepens color, body, and aromatic concentration. The wine then ages for twelve months in large French oak barrels, a further year in concrete vats, and at least six months in bottle before release.
The result is an intense ruby red wine with aromas of black cherry, sour cherry, and white pepper, layered with delicate notes of vanilla and chocolate. The palate is easy-drinking yet structured, with silky tannins and a long, savory finish. It suits grilled meats, hearty stews, or a well-charred burger.
