Tenuta di Capezzana traces its winemaking roots back to the year 804, making it one of the oldest documented estates in Italy. The property has belonged to the Contini Bonacossi family for generations, and its Renaissance-era villa and sixteenth-century cellars still anchor production today. It was Count Ugo Contini Bonacossi who pushed the estate toward modern, quality-driven winemaking in the mid-twentieth century, work that helped Carmignano earn DOC status in 1975 and DOCG recognition in 1988. The first vintage of Villa di Capezzana was released in 1925, and it remains the estate's flagship bottling.

Villa di Capezzana is a blend of roughly 80 percent Sangiovese and 20 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, a combination required under Carmignano DOCG rules and rooted in Cabernet cuttings said to have arrived from Bordeaux in the sixteenth century. The vines, aged twenty to forty years, grow at 180 to 220 meters on soils of clay, limestone, schist, and marl, farmed organically. After fermentation, the wine ages roughly twelve to sixteen months across French oak tonneaux and large oak casks before bottling.

The glass shows bright ruby with violet edges, opening onto cherry, blackberry, and plum layered with leather, tobacco, and Mediterranean herbs. The palate stays balanced and elegant, with fine tannins and a long, savory finish. This is a natural match for roasted lamb, grilled sausages, or aged pecorino.

"Opening like a veritable spice box, the 2020 Carmignano Villa di

Capezzana entices with its autumnal blend of allspice, clove, and star

anise before giving way to steeped plums and sage. It’s silky and

refined, with supple textures and ripe red and blue fruits that swirl

across a stream of vibrant acidity. It leaves a pleasantly chewy

sensation while finishing with fine-grained tannins and a staining of

primary concentration. Wait a full minute and hints of white pepper

still linger. Wow. While richer than usual and easier to appreciate out of

the gate, the 2020 is balanced for a long and steady evolution.
