Founded in 1948 by Francis Usseglio, an Italian immigrant, this Châteauneuf-du-Pape stalwart also makes a genuinely excellent Lirac from vines just across the river, on soils quite similar to their more famous appellation neighbor. Sourced from 40-year-old vines, a blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, and 10% each Syrah and Cinsault, hand-harvested and destemmed, then aged 12 months in a mix of concrete vats and demi-muids. Expect ripe black cherry, black licorice, and peppery, savory herb notes, moving into a medium to full-bodied palate with a layered, mouth-filling texture and real length. A genuine value play for fans of the Usseglio style, offering serious Châteauneuf-adjacent character at a fraction of the price.
