2023 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou Saint-Julien There are Second Growths, and then there is Ducru-Beaucaillou. For decades the undisputed soul and standard-bearer of Saint-Julien — and by many accounts the most consistent overachiever in the entire Médoc — Ducru-Beaucaillou occupies a position of quiet, unassailable supremacy that no reclassification could improve upon and no vintage has yet diminished. Its legendary terroir of deep, large-pebbled gravel — the "beautiful stones" of its name — sitting directly above the Gironde on Saint-Julien's most prized riverside ridge, yields a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend of extraordinary refinement, precision, and sheer classical beauty that has set the benchmark for this appellation for generations. The 2023 is nothing short of magnificent — a wine of breathtaking aromatic complexity and architectural perfection, opening with blackcurrant, crushed violet, cedarwood, and iron-veined gravel minerality before revealing layer upon layer of dark fruit, exotic spice, graphite, and a haunting floral elegance that is Ducru's most personal and indelible signature. The tannins are immaculate — firm, fine-grained, and seemingly immortal — the acidity perfectly calibrated, and the finish of a length and complexity that demands years, perhaps decades, of patient cellaring to fully reveal its magnificence. This is Bordeaux at its most classically and timelessly great. One of the wines of the vintage, full stop.

98+ Points
"The 2023 Ducru-Beaucaillou is a jewel of wine. Soaring aromatics are immediately captivating. A rush of red/purplish fruit, mocha, new leather and well-judged oak build as the 2023 shows off its vertical structure and total class. There's plenty of Ducru opulence, but everything is in the right place. I must admit, I like the lower-alcohol vintages at Ducru quite a bit, as there is less oak extraction, which in turn yields wines of exquisite finesse and class. A highlight."
