Operating out of the legendary wine-growing village of Montpeyroux, sister and brother team Amélie d'Hurlaborde and Sébastien Archer have turned their boutique estate, Mas d'Amile, into a revered cult icon of the Langehdoc. Launched in 2007 from a tiny inheritance of old-vine Carignan left by their grandfather, they famously crafted their first vintages inside his old garage. Today, they farm just a handful of acres with meticulous, low-intervention organic principles.

The story behind "Le Petitou" (meaning "The Little One" in the local southern dialect) is a delightfully happy accident. Amélie originally set out to make a summer rosé from her family’s old vines. Dissatisfied with the initial press, she pivoted and decided to create something far more interesting: an ultra-fresh, light-on-its-feet, and elegantly chiseled red wine built for immediate, high-energy enjoyment.

The label itself was lovingly sketched by Amélie’s children when they were young, perfectly capturing the youthful, vibrant spirit of the juice inside. Sourced from 40- to 60-year-old vines perched on the high limestone foothills of the Larzac terraces, this blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan skips any heavy wood aging. It is raised entirely in stainless steel tanks with minimal sulfur additions. The 2023 vintage is an absolute masterclass in tension, delivering all the complex garrigue perfumes of the sun-baked Mediterranean coast with the athletic, nimble weight of a fine Cru Beaujolais.

Tasting Profile

  • Aroma: Bright, breezy, and incredibly expressive. The wine pours a gorgeous, translucent ruby-red color with shimmering magenta rims. The nose opens up instantly with an energetic bouquet of fresh cranberries, wild sour cherries, and red raspberries. As it breathes, it reveals complex, savory Southern French top notes of black tapenade, wild licorice, fresh fennel leaf, and a distinct wash of stony mineral reduction.

  • Palate: Medium-bodied, crunchy, and packed with vertical tension. It hits the palate with a refreshing, linear stream of tart plum, pomegranate, and red currants steeped in herbal tea. This is a wonderfully transparent, soil-driven red; there is zero heavy or cloying jamminess here. A mouthwatering line of natural alpine acidity completely enlivens the mid-palate, keeping the wine tasting exceptionally light and athletic.

  • Finish: Long, snap-clean, and beautifully savory. The tannins are remarkably fine-grained, see-through, and filmy—almost reminiscent of a high-altitude Pinot Noir. It tapers off into a focused close laced with lingering nuances of dried Mediterranean herbs, a touch of orange bitters, and a lip-smacking mineral salinity that demands food.

Best Food Pairings

Thanks to its soaring natural acidity, light-to-medium body, and low-tannin frame, "Le Petitou" is a phenomenal food-pairing chameleon that functions perfectly from the appetizer course straight through to rustic mains:

  • The Bistro Starter: Thinly sliced beef carpaccio drizzled with balsamic, artisanal charcuterie boards loaded with prosciutto, and oil-cured black olives.

  • Casual Comforts: Roasted rotisserie chicken, wood-fired wild mushroom and goat cheese pizzas, or pasta tossed in a light, herbaceous tomato-sauce.

  • Savory Mains: Grilled pork tenderloin with a mustard-herb crust, pan-roasted duck breast, or veal chops sautéed with fresh rosemary.

  • Tangy Bites: It has the natural acidity to match effortlessly with pickles, capers, marinated artichoke hearts, and young semi-hard cheeses like Comté or Fontina.
