Born on an estate founded in 1962 at the western threshold of the Chianti Classico zone, the 2021 Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva carries forward a legacy of blending innovation with strict appellation standards. This vintage relies primarily on Sangiovese from the family’s hillside vineyards, complemented by minimal additions of Canaiolo and Colorino to shape structure rather than dilute character. Following fermentation, the wine ages for the required two-year minimum across a combination of French tonneaux and neutral Slavonian oak botti. The extended maturation in larger, subtler vessels preserves primary fruit expression while developing the layered depth expected of a Riserva designation.

Upon pouring, the wine presents a bright ruby silhouette that gradually shifts to garnet at the rim. The nose delivers concentrated dark stone fruit and black cherry, woven through with violet, cracked peppercorn, and a whisper of dried Tuscan herbs. A hint of blood orange lifts the heavier aromatic tones without overshadowing them. On the palate, the experience remains full-bodied yet remarkably vibrant. Firm but polished tannins interlock with crisp natural acidity, creating a frame that guides the flavors through a persistent, energizing finish.

This structure makes it equally suited to stand up to rich preparations or cut through hard cheeses. Serve it alongside grilled lamb chops, slow-roasted venison, or parmesan-aged cow milk cheeses like Pecorino Toscano. Whether you are building out a cellar of modern Central Tuscan reds or seeking a dinner centerpiece that balances tradition with approachable drinkability, this release delivers consistent quality year after year.

95 Points
"This luscious, dense red is packed with cherry, blackberry, pomegranate and violet flavors. Its tannins are ripe and refined, while the vibrant acidity keeps everything focused. An iron streak weaves through the long, energetic finish. This is approachable now yet will be better in 2–3 years. Best from 2026 through 2045. 833 cases made, 400 cases imported"
