2023 Alain Hudelot-Noellat - Clos de Vougeot (750ml)
Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat, founded in 1962 in Chambolle-Musigny, is one of Burgundy's most collected addresses, its tiny production and enviable holdings across grand crus like Richebourg and Romanée-Saint-Vivant making the wines notoriously hard to find. Alain's grandson, Charles Van Canneyt, now runs the domaine with a light touch, favoring purity and finesse over power, and has spent recent vintages steering away from the heavier extraction seen in some of the estate's earlier releases.
The domaine's Clos de Vougeot comes from a 0.70-hectare holding at the top of the slope, in the favored lieux-dits of Chioures and La Garenne, where better drainage sets the fruit apart from parcels lower down this famously uneven grand cru. Careful, restrained winemaking preserves the site's natural elegance rather than chasing density or sheer weight.
This cuvée shows a richer bouquet than the domaine's other wines, with violet and iris notes layered over dark cherry, confit orange, and rose petal. The palate is medium bodied, with fine, saturated tannins and a silky texture kept in check by lively acidity, closing with a hint of blood orange. Pair it with braised oxtail, roast squab, or aged Époisses.
