The domaine's classic cuvée, sourced from vines aged 35 to 75 years across all four of Châteauneuf's terroirs, sand, clay, limestone, and galets roulés. A traditional blend led by Grenache with Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and a touch of Clairette Blanche, raised in a mix of old oak foudres, demi-muids, concrete vats, and barrels to build complexity without heavy oak influence. Expect a nose of ripe red and black fruit, spice, and garrigue, moving into a full, velvety palate with soft, silky tannins and real freshness. An accessible yet age-worthy Châteauneuf, equally suited as a serious house red or a wine to lay down for the next 5 to 10 years.

Region Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, France
Producer Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils
Cuvée Première Pierre
Grape Blend Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Clairette Blanche
Vintage 2023
Bottle Size 750ml
92 Points
"Checking in as 75% Grenache from La Crau, La Serre, Guigasse, and L'Escaouland with 10% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre, 5% Cinsault, and 5% Clairette, the 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape Premiere Pierre was destemmed and aged in foudre, barrels, and demi-muids, with the latter being almost all used. It's beautifully polished, balanced, and elegant, with ripe blackberries, cherries, Provençal herbs, and flowers with a hint of licorice. Medium-bodied and pure, it has balanced, ripe tannins and a great finish. Drink bottles over the coming 10-15 years or more."
