Weingut Prager traces back to Franz Prager, a co-founder of the Vinea Wachau classification system, whose reputation for fine winemaking was already well established when his son-in-law Toni Bodenstein joined the estate. Trained as a biologist, geologist, and historian, Bodenstein has spent decades unlocking the secrets of the Wachau's varied soils, summing up his philosophy with the phrase from rock to wine. Under his direction, Prager has grown into one of the most respected and internationally recognized Riesling producers in Austria.

Klaus lies just beside the celebrated Achleiten vineyard and ranks among the Wachau's most storied sites for Riesling, with terraces so steep that the gradient reaches seventy seven percent at its sharpest point. The southeast facing slope is built on dark migmatite, amphibolite, and paragneiss, and Bodenstein's own parcel here dates back to 1952. Wines from Klaus are known as Prager's most assertive and structured, built for power rather than immediate charm.

The 2021 shows pale chartreuse hues with aromas of yellow stone fruit, mango, and tangerine, framed by a touch of blossom honey. The palate is dense and powerful yet well balanced, with a long, backbone driven finish. Pair it with grilled branzino, a spicy fish curry, or roasted pork sausages.

97 Points
"Enticing and subtle nose of Yamanashi white peach, wild berries and herbs. Ripe, but also seriously concentrated and elegant, this has deep minerality at the very long and focused finish. This is built for the long term, but is already really delicious. Drink or hold."
