2024 Caprera - Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC Le Vasche (750ml)
Caprera was founded in 2012 in Pietranico, in the hills of the Pescara hinterland, when friends and founding partners Luca Paolo and Alfonso set out to find a piece of land in Abruzzo suited to native varieties. The estate now spans twenty-two organic hectares across two distinct plots at roughly 400 meters of elevation, with only a small portion planted to vines and the rest given over to woodland, olive trees, arable fields, and a pond that supports local wildlife. Much of their planting material traces back to cuttings from Emidio Pepe's old vineyards, a nod to the deep-rooted traditions of the region.
The wine takes its name, Le Vasche, from the ancient stone crushing vats still scattered across the property's agricultural landscape. Grapes come from Montepulciano vines grown on soils of limestone and bluish clay marl, an environment that lends a mineral edge to the fruit. As a Cerasuolo, the wine gets brief skin contact with the deeply pigmented Montepulciano skins, enough to build color and structure while keeping the freshness and lift typical of a rosé. The result sits between red wine and rosato, drawing complexity from the former and drinkability from the latter.
The glass shows bright cherry fruit alongside notes of Mediterranean herbs, with a bone dry finish and lively acidity carrying it through. The texture has more grip and depth than a typical rosé, while remaining easy to drink on its own. Its structure makes it a flexible partner at the table, pairing naturally with grilled seafood, cured meats, or a tomato based pasta.
