Diplomático was established in 1959 as part of Licorerías Unidas S.A., a company originally organized with Seagram as a major shareholder to consolidate Venezuela's spirits production. In 2002 the distillery, located at the foot of the Andes in the heart of Venezuela's sugar cane growing region, was purchased by a group of Venezuelan entrepreneurs and became fully independent, rebranding as Destilerías Unidas S.A. It has since grown into the country's largest rum producer, drawing on fertile land, near-constant humidity, and pure water sourced from Terepaima National Park.

Reserva Exclusiva is distilled from a mix of virgin sugar cane honey and molasses using both copper pot stills and a smaller portion of column still material for balance. Diplomático maintains its own proprietary yeast strains for fermentation. The various component rums are aged separately in American oak barrels for up to twelve years before master blender Tito Cordero brings them together, along with a touch of added cane sugar, into the finished blend.

The rum pours a deep amber and opens with orange peel, toffee, and licorice on the nose. On the palate it is rich and full bodied, with baking spice, brown sugar, and dark fruit leading into a long, sweet, toffee fudge finish.

"A complex blend of Copper pot still rums aged for 12 long years, has a characterful nose, showing fruit cake, rum'n'raisin ice cream, cocoa, dried ginger, cinnamon and clove. Develops baked bananas with fudge sauce and chewy toffee notes alongside vanilla oak and a deeper note of syrupy gingerbread, with hints of orange zest. The palate evokes chocolate sauce and the sweet toffee, fudge and tropical fruit flavours from the nose. Flakes of Terry's Dark Chocolate Orange sprinkled over melted vanilla ice cream. Deep, vivid and extremely seductive flavours."
