Neisson Rhum (Agricole) Blanc Rum 1L
Neisson was founded in 1932 by brothers Jean and Adrien Neisson, who established their distillery at Le Carbet on Martinique's northwest coast, at the foot of Mount Pelée. It remains one of only two family-owned rum distilleries left on the island, now run by Grégory Vernant-Neisson, who continues his grandfather's philosophy of respecting the terroir. Roughly twenty hectares of estate sugarcane grow on the volcanic, sandy-clay soils surrounding the distillery, with several hectares now certified organic.
As an AOC Martinique rhum agricole, this white rum is distilled from freshly pressed sugarcane juice rather than molasses. Neisson ferments its cane juice for around seventy-two hours, longer than most major producers on the island, before distilling in a traditional copper Savalle column still powered largely by burning bagasse, the crushed cane fiber left after pressing. The distillate then rests in stainless steel tanks, where it is gradually aerated and reduced with water over several months down to 52.5 percent alcohol by volume.
The rum pours crystal clear and opens with sweet, licorice-tinged aromas layered over fresh sugarcane and a touch of citrus. The palate is round and well balanced, carrying genuine cane sweetness through to a long, smooth finish.
