Antioqueño Aguardiente comes from the Fábrica de Licores de Antioquia (FLA), a state-owned distillery in Medellín established in 1919 that transformed the spirit from a regional specialty into Colombia's most recognized spirit brand. Spanish conquistadors introduced distillation techniques to the region in the sixteenth century, and by the eighteenth century distinct regional variations had emerged, with each Colombian department developing its own signature style. FLA eventually standardized the Antioquian recipe, turning it into the country's best selling and most widely exported aguardiente.

Antioquia's volcanic soil, high altitude, and consistent climate create ideal conditions for sugarcane cultivation, and local water sources filtered through ancient rock formations provide the base for the spirit. Producers ferment sugarcane juice into a low-alcohol wine, then run it through copper stills to concentrate the alcohol before flavoring it with natural anise essence and a touch of sugar and honey. The finished spirit is bottled at 29% ABV.

In the glass, this aguardiente pours perfectly clear and opens with an assertive licorice and anise nose backed by warm notes of toffee and honey. The palate is sweet and herbal, carrying a gentle sugarcane richness beneath the star anise, before finishing with a warming, faintly peppery heat characteristic of unaged Colombian aguardiente.

"Beginning with the very first sniff and all the way until the crisp concise finish, the tasty anise is the star. Drifting across the taste buds in soft clean rum, it has a creamy, light mouth-feel. Aguardiente is typically taken as a shot, but may also be utilized as a creative ingredient in many beverages; it would also pair fantastically with grilled meat, fried bread, tropical fruits or hard cheese.Colombia's national alcoholic beverage is Aguardiente. Antioqueno is the best-selling Aguardiente in Colombia and in the world for that matter. There are different versions of aguardiente, or 'firewater', all over South America. In Colombia aguardiente is an anise-flavored liquor made from sugar cane. It has a 29% alcohol content. Colombians usually drink it straight, in shots. They drink it everywhere. You haven't lived until you've witnessed a seventy year old couple polish off a bottle between them on the bus from Bogota to Medellin."
