El Dorado is produced by Demerara Distillers Limited in Guyana, a country whose rum making history stretches back to the 1600s, when local sugar estates supplied the British Royal Navy for more than two centuries. DDL remains the last distillery in the world operating a collection of historic wooden stills, including the Enmore wooden Coffey still, the Versailles single wooden pot still, and the Albion Savalle still, each dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries and each imparting its own distinct character to the final blend.

The 21 Year Special Reserve is built from rums drawn from these legendary stills, with every component in the blend aged a minimum of twenty one years in American oak casks. Unlike solera style blending used by some rum houses, DDL guarantees that the stated age reflects the youngest rum in the bottle rather than an average, a point of pride for the distillery. The finished rum is bottled at 40% ABV and presented in a distinctive hand blown flask inspired bottle.

The nose is rich with mocha, toffee, pipe tobacco, and dark spice, layered over dried fruit and toasted oak. On the palate, tropical fruit and coffee meet dark chocolate, molasses, and leather, with a velvety texture that leads into a long, evolving finish of tobacco and warm spice. It is best appreciated neat or with a single large ice cube, though it can anchor a spirit forward Rum Old Fashioned. Its richness pairs beautifully with dark chocolate desserts or a well aged cheese.
