English Harbour 5 Year comes from Antigua Distillery Limited, founded in 1933 in St. John's by a group of Portuguese rum shop owners looking to consolidate their purchasing and gain more control over local production. ADL built its early reputation on the everyday rum Cavalier, then shifted toward a lighter-bodied house style in the 1960s. The English Harbour brand itself arrived in 1990, though its first 5 Year expression had actually appeared nearly a decade earlier, in 1981, released to mark Antigua and Barbuda's independence from the United Kingdom.

The base rum is distilled from molasses on ADL's copper column still, the same equipment used across the distillery's range, then matured for a minimum of five years in ex-bourbon casks under Antigua's tropical climate. This shorter aging period, compared to the distillery's 10 Year Reserve, is meant to preserve a fresher, more approachable character while still allowing the wood to round out the spirit. The rum is bottled at 40% ABV.

Warm amber in the glass, English Harbour 5 Year opens with mild spice, banana bread, and toasted nuts on the nose. The palate carries dried apricot, toffee, and roasted nuts, finishing with a gentle wash of brown spice rather than heavy oak.
