Kraken Rum is owned and distributed by Proximo Spirits, and takes its name and dark, striking identity from the legendary Kraken, a mythical sea monster with roots in centuries old sightings of real giant squid. Launched in 2010, the brand entered a spiced rum category already occupied by names like Morgan's Spiced and Sailor Jerry, distinguishing itself with a deeper, blacker color and an old fashioned pirate style flagon bottle that has become instantly recognizable on shelves.

The base spirit is distilled from molasses at the Angostura Distillery in Trinidad and Tobago, then aged between one and two years before being blended with a proprietary mix of spices believed to include at least eleven ingredients, with cinnamon, ginger, and clove among the confirmed components. Unlike many aged rums, the deep black color comes primarily from caramel coloring rather than extended barrel time, giving the finished spirit its signature dramatic appearance. It is bottled at 47% ABV, a higher proof than many competing spiced rums.

The nose leads with caramel, toffee, and warm spice, while the palate brings cinnamon, vanilla, and nutmeg over a rich, medium bodied texture with a hint of molasses sweetness. The finish lingers with spice and a touch of dark sugar. Kraken Black Spiced Rum is best suited to mixing, especially in a Rum and Cola or other spiced cocktails, though it can also be sipped neat by those who enjoy a bolder, sweeter style.
