Malibu Coconut Rum 750ml

Malibu was created in 1978 by Tom Jago, a British spirits executive at International Distillers & Vintners who later went on to develop Baileys Irish Cream and Johnnie Walker Blue. The idea began as a way to simplify the piña colada, then a fussy cocktail that called for fresh coconut water and several separate ingredients, by combining white rum and coconut flavor into a single bottle. Originally released as Coco Rico, the brand was renamed Malibu in 1980 and has since passed through several corporate owners, landing with Pernod Ricard in 2005, and has grown into the world's best selling coconut flavored rum.

The base rum has long been distilled at the West Indies Rum Distillery on Barbados, one of the Caribbean's oldest and most active rum producers. Production starts with molasses, a byproduct of raw sugar refining, which is fermented and then run through three successive distillation stages in tall specialized vats to yield a clean, light bodied spirit. That base rum is shipped abroad, where today Malibu is primarily blended in Canada, with additional production in the United States and Spain, and combined with natural coconut flavoring and cane sugar before bottling at 21% ABV.

The result is a soft, sweet spirit with a nose of fresh coconut, vanilla, and whipped cream, carrying a smooth, low intensity palate that leans more toward coconut cream soda than a traditional rum character.
