Planteray 5 yr Rum 750ml
Planteray, formerly Plantation Rum, is the rum portfolio of Maison Ferrand, the Cognac house owned by Alexandre Gabriel. This Barbados expression is distilled at the Stade's West Indies Rum Distillery, founded in 1893 by George Stade, a prolific distiller with a long history of patents to his name and one of the island's oldest continuously operating rum producers. The distillery sits directly on Brighton Beach, giving the brand its claim to being Barbados's only beachside distillery.
Five Years is a blend of both pot and twin column still rums from the West Indies Rum Distillery, built in the authentic Barbadian style. The rum spends its first three years maturing in ex bourbon casks on the island, absorbing tropical heat and humidity, before being shipped across the Atlantic to France. There it finishes maturing for an additional one to two years in ex Ferrand cognac casks in the cooler cellars of the French southwest, a signature double aging process that bridges two very different climates.
The rum pours a bright amber gold and opens with caramel, orange peel, and ripe tropical fruit on the nose, along with hints of toasted marshmallow and baking spice. The palate brings layers of candied fruit and vanilla from the bourbon aging, balanced by delicate tannins and fresh fruit picked up during the French finish. It performs well in classic tiki style cocktails like a Mai Tai or Jungle Bird, and is smooth enough to enjoy neat.
