Planteray Original Dark Rum 1L
Planteray Original Dark traces back to one of the earliest expressions in what was then the Plantation Rum range, first formulated with Trinidadian rum well before 2010. Around 2017 Maison Ferrand's master blender Alexandre Gabriel reworked the recipe to pair young Barbadian rum with older, high-ester Jamaican rum, a combination that has since gone on to win the top prize at the Rum Masters competition in both 2019 and 2020 and remains one of the brand's best known blends.
The Barbados component comes from the West Indies Rum Distillery, where column and pot still rums ferment for 72 hours and age one to three years in ex-bourbon barrels. The Jamaican side is pot still rum from Long Pond Distillery, fermented far longer, over two full weeks, to develop the intense funk known locally as hogo, and aged ten to fifteen years. Gabriel blends the two, then ships the combined rum to southwestern France, where it rests in wooden vats for several months before bottling at 40% ABV.
The nose carries black peppercorn, clove, baked cherry, and prune, backed by dry stone and black tea. On the palate, white raisin and dried pineapple meet warm pepper and molasses, finishing dry, fruity, and distinctly spiced.
