Rhum Barbancourt 5 Star 8 yr Rum 750ml
Rhum Barbancourt 5 Star traces back to 1862, when Dupré Barbancourt, a native of France's Charente region, brought Cognac-style distilling techniques to Haiti and founded the distillery near Port-au-Prince. The Gardère family, descended from Barbancourt's wife Nathalie, has run the company ever since, now in its sixth generation of family leadership, and Barbancourt remains Haiti's best known export, sold in roughly twenty countries.
Unlike most Caribbean rum, Barbancourt is made from 100% fresh sugarcane juice rather than molasses, giving it an agricole-style profile. Hand-cut cane, grown locally, is delivered to the distillery and crushed almost immediately to preserve its freshness, then fermented with the distillery's own proprietary yeast. Following Cognac tradition, the fermented cane juice is double-distilled in copper pot stills before aging a full eight years in French Limousin oak barrels, the same style of cask used in Cognac production, which are shipped to Haiti, locally reconditioned, and reused for decades before replacement.
The nose is lively and dry, with toasted wood, vanilla, and pepper meeting bright cane juice character and a touch of citrus peel. On the palate, roasted brown sugar, toffee, and vanilla bean develop alongside ginger spice, closing on a long, warming finish built on baking spice and dry oak tannin.
