Ron Medellin Gran Reserva 12 yr Rum 750ml
Ron Medellín is produced by La Fábrica de Licores y Alcoholes de Antioquia, a distillery established in Medellín, Colombia in 1919. By 1936 the operation was producing several thousand bottles of spirits a day, and in 1968 the facility that stands today was built. It was David Cadavid Gónima who, in 1946, set out to create a truly Colombian style rum under the Ron Medellín name, and the distillery has since become known for both its rum and its Antioqueño brandy line.
Gran Reserva 12 Años is a blend of Colombian rums matured naturally in American oak barrels for between eight and twelve years, aged at roughly five thousand feet above sea level. The high altitude keeps temperatures cooler than typical tropical aging environments, which slows evaporation and results in a smaller angel's share over the long maturation period. Only carefully selected sugarcane from across Colombia goes into the blend, with no added sugar or artificial flavoring.
The rum pours a mild amber and opens with fruity aromas that give way to oak on the nose. On the palate, vanilla and baked apple lead into a smooth, rounded body with light smoky undertones, finishing long and warm. It works well as a sipping rum on its own or as the base for a more refined cocktail.
