Wray & Nephew Overproof Rum LITER

Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum comes from J. Wray & Nephew Ltd., the Kingston, Jamaica company John Wray founded in 1825 as a small tavern and rum-blending operation. His nephew Charles James Ward joined the business in the 1860s and pushed it onto the international stage, and after passing through the Lindo Brothers' ownership in 1916, the company was acquired by the Campari Group in 2012. Today it is Jamaica's largest spirits producer, and its white overproof rum accounts for roughly 90 percent of the country's domestic rum consumption, making it as much a cultural fixture as a commercial product.

The rum is distilled from Jamaican molasses sourced largely from the New Yarmouth Estate, fermented 24 to 36 hours with proprietary yeast strains that help generate the high concentration of esters characteristic of Jamaican pot still rum. Production runs across a combination of traditional copper pot stills and column stills, and unlike most premium rums, the spirit goes straight from the still to the bottle without any aging, preserving its raw intensity. It is bottled at a formidable 63% ABV.

The result is fiery and intensely aromatic, dominated by ripe banana and tropical fruit esters, with a hot, funky punch on the palate that mellows only slightly with dilution.
