Bulleit traces its roots to Augustus Bulleit, a 19th-century Kentucky tavern owner whose original recipe leaned heavily on rye grain. His great-great-grandson Tom Bulleit revived the family name in 1987, though he built the modern brand around a high-rye bourbon rather than a true rye whiskey. Diageo, which acquired Bulleit when it purchased Seagram in 2000, later expanded the lineup with a dedicated rye release in 2011, timed to a broader American rye whiskey revival that Bulleit helped drive.

Bulleit Rye is distilled at MGP in Lawrenceburg, Indiana from a mash bill of 95 percent rye and 5 percent malted barley, one of the higher rye ratios in the category and the same recipe MGP made famous across the industry. The whiskey matures in new charred oak barrels split between Indiana and Kentucky warehouses, aged to Bulleit's standard before bottling at 90 proof in small batches, with each batch assessed individually for maturity before release.

The nose leads with dill and mint tangled up in caramel and vanilla, joined by cherry, cinnamon, and citrus peel. On the palate, rye spice arrives gradually rather than all at once, layering in toffee, honey, and orange marmalade with a touch of black pepper. The finish runs short to medium, closing on warm cinnamon and rye bread with a final trace of dark chocolate.

"Has there ever been a moment when you've been sipping Bulleit Bourbon and wanted it to have even more rye? Well you're in luck, they now have their own Rye whiskey! Bulleit Rye is made with a mashbill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley and is produced in small batches. An absolutely stunning rye.

Nose: Big heaps of cherries and vanilla, with subtle notes of leather and tobacco.

Palate: Rather hot at first, the spices coming to the forefront. This is followed by peaches, more cherries and a little bit of orange zest.

Finish: A smoky finish, carried by cinnamon, allspice and a hint of sweeties.

Overall: The Bulleit distillery sure know their way around a rye whiskey.
