Sourced exclusively from Mastrojanni’s historic Vigna Schiena d’Asino vineyard, the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva captures the distinct terroir of Castelnuovo dell’Abate through hand-harvested grapes aged patiently in large oak vessels.

Planted in 1975, this prized parcel rests on clay and schist soils along a ridge near the Abbey of Sant’Antimo. Named for its donkey-back topography, the site yields fruit in strict quantities, limiting the 2018 release to approximately 6,000 bottles. Under Illy family ownership, the estate follows a traditional Brunello protocol: grapes are gently pressed and destemmed before extended maceration, then matured in substantial wood casks that favor structural development over quick oaking shortcuts.

The 2018 vintage experienced alternating warm and cool stretches, resulting in a more reserved, savory expression than richer recent years. Taste profiles feature drier, brittle red fruit layered with autumn leaves, wild game, forest underbrush, cured meats, and black pepper. Finely textured, compact tannins deliver refined elegance without heavy weight. Though constructed for long-term cellar evolution, this bottling offers a broader drinking window upfront compared to other Mastrojanni Riservas.

This structured Tuscan red requires minimal intervention to shine alongside matching dishes. Ideal food pairings include braised game, aged pecorino cheese, and a heavy charcuterie spread featuring assorted cured meats.

95 Points
"This wine is not labeled Riserva, but it could be for all practical purposes. The Mastrojanni 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Schiena d'Asino has a dry quality of fruit, more brittle, if you will, with fallen autumn leaves, wild game, underbrush, hard salami and black pepper. Like many of the Brunellos from 2018, the primary fruit is not as bright. The tannins are finely textured, but I probably wouldn't age the 2018s as long as I would the 2019s or the 2016s. The last time this wine was made was in 2016, in fact. With this vintage, we have 6,000 bottles."
