The 2019 Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino Riserva delivers the concentrated structure and elevated fruit characteristic of a high-altitude, fully organic Tuscan vintage harvested at peak phenolic maturity.

Grown across roughly 91 acres averaging 1,800 feet south of Montalcino, the wine’s foundation rests on a mosaic of fifteen distinct soil blocks blending calcareous marl and friable galesto shale. Permanent grassing and green manure practices protect root zones and regulate water uptake without synthetic interventions. Harvesting exclusively from mature Sangiovese Grosso vines, the estate delayed picking through a cool, moisture-retaining spring into a steady summer that pushed each berry toward complete physiological ripeness.

Cool nights and extended hang time preserved vibrant acidity inside skins thick with anthocyanins and tannins. Following fermentation, the cuvée spent the required multi-year maturation period in wood before release, allowing primary fruit to integrate with savory secondary characteristics. On the nose, expressions of wild geranium, white magnolia, stewed cherry, and black plum unfold steadily, giving way to drying tobacco, dried orange peel, and damp earth. The palate offers a broad, muscular frame wrapped in supple tannins, with crisp acid cutting cleanly through a lengthy finish marked by dark cocoa, wet stone, and crushed Mediterranean herbs.

This reserve-style Brunello pairs best with braised short rib, roasted game birds, or a substantial block of aged Grana Padano. Served alongside these heavier preparations, the wine’s balanced acidity and integrated tannic backbone provide a reliable counterpoint to rich fats and savory umami profiles.
