The 2020 Barone Ricasoli Chianti Classico Gran Selezione CeniPrimo delivers concentrated Sangiovese profiles defined by the warm, low-lying Arbia valley site in Gaiole in Chianti. Planted in 1998 at 300 meters elevation on silty, fluvial soils, this single-vineyard parcel captures consistent sun exposure that advances phenolic ripeness while preserving natural acidity. The 100 percent Sangiovese fruit is hand-harvested and fermented for approximately two weeks with daily punch-downs. Maturation occurs in 500-liter tonneaux for twenty-two months using a blend of new and once-used oak, preserving structural integrity without masking varietal markers.

The 2020 vintage pours with a youthful ruby core graduating to magenta at the rim. Aromatic layers include cedar, kirsch, fresh leather, and candied raspberry, supported by background licorice. On the palate, texture registers as velvet-smooth with firmly integrated acids, delivering a notably extended finish.

Suggested pairings: Grilled lamb cutlets, slow-roasted beef or game stews, and aged hard cheeses such as Pecorino Toscano. The wine’s natural brightness balances rendered fat, while its earthy tannins complement slow-cooked vegetables and wild herbs.

Bottled under the historic Barone Ricasoli label—recognized as Italy’s oldest documented winery since 1141 and home to the 1872 Chianti formulation by Baron Bettino Ricasoli—this cuvée reflects the estate’s current focus on controlled yields and precise vineyard zoning.

94 Points
"A complex, focused red marked by enticing aromas of cherry, black currant, violet, mineral and spices. Dry and bracing, with a firm, mineral-infused finish. Shows fine balance and a lingering aftertaste, where the fruit, mineral and savory elements converge. Best from 2025 through 2043. 916 cases made, 350 cases imported."
